Going Green..er

Greetings! I often fondly recall my foray into the conservation movement. I was in my twenties when I finally embraced the desire not to waste. I began recycling aluminum cans. Doing so was an effort as I had to deliver the cans to a recycling center. The closest one was over thirty minutes away. This wasn't a trip I made regularly, so that meant collecting the cans until I had a critical mass to deliver. Keeping cans around the house involves rinsing them once they were emptied of their original contents so not to attract ants or create odors. To many of my friends, this process seemed exhausting.

I would counter by saying, I only recycle cans, I don't separate glass, plastics, papers, and this is an exact quote, "or compost like those tree hugging freaks." Back when we still separated out recyclables I began one by one adding Items to the list. The evolution continued progressively. These days our recycling bin is always full and we rarely have actual bags of garbage ready for weekly disposal.

My newest move is to consume or use as much as possible from the food we grow. It's been kind of funny as I have this internal dialog, “I need some material for the compost and I have to save some organic food waste for our worm bins.” As to the food, I've found uses for watermelon rind, like salsa and relish. I cooked the tops of beets with kale and other greens. Our favorite of this summer has been the use of carrot tops. We used them in salads, made pesto, slaws and even put them in a stuffed shells mixture.

Who know what is next. At this point, I know better than to set limitations.

Grow food. Eat it all.

Triple Peach

Greetings! I’ve been longing for a new running event. So, I logged onto the Atlanta Track Club web site to check out the running event calendar. On the home page I found exactly what I had in mind.

In fact, two things on the site caught my attention. The Track Club’s Grand Prix series is bringing back cross country events. They have one in Cartersville at the end of the month. I read about that with great interest. The problem is I am already scheduled to run in a 5K that day.  It’s a race I have considered running since 1997.  I think I need to go ahead and check it off the list.

However, the second event, the new Triple Peach Series, completely has me intrigued.  This trifecta includes the massive 60,000 participant Fourth of July Peacthree Road Race, a new 10 miler in October and the Atlanta Half Marathon. All of these races move along Atlanta’s iconic Peachtree Street.

The Atlanta half marathon is a favorite of mine. I did not run the Peachtree this year as I had counted myself retired from that event after 20 years of participating. Now, I see I have one more in to go. I must say I really like the idea of running in the Triple Peach series for no reason other than the name.

Find events. Run.

Roswell Area Park

Greetings! For over a decade I’ve had numerous opportunities to run in the Rowell Area Park. I’ve galloped through the park with Shannan, friends, and once in a road race. Not a single time did the experience disappoint. I often recommend Roswell Area Park (my friends in the community call it Roswell Rec) as a terrific place to run.

The advantages of the park include the route is well marked. It has good lighting, and the park is regularly well populated. My favorite part come in the scenery of the 3.2 mile course (which is an out and back loop). The long (orange) path passes schools, sports fields, tennis courts, crosses a creek and circumnavigates a small lake with a fountain. Water fowl and turtles inhabit the lake. Last weekend, I saw a turtle with a shell as big as a basketball. The other two high points are the park has multiple restrooms and water fountains. It’s a winner through and through.

Enjoy the route. Run.
