Greetings! For many
years Shannan and I have been meeting with our friend Joel for exercise and
interesting outings. Our trips have been mostly a day’s ride in Georgia, but
we’ve ventured out to the surrounding states a few times. We met the Sunday of
Memorial Day weekend for something we rarely ever do, repeat an outing. Around
10 years ago the three of us visited the Georgia Renaissance Festival in
Fairburn. That first go around we had a turkey leg and tried to get into the spirit
of the event. We didn’t try as hard as possible. A number of people in
attendance took the whole thing seriously and dressed in period piece costume.
Lo these many years
later as a vegetarian finding a healthy and thematic meal proved a little more
difficult. Philosophical choices aside, the turkey legs, along with pork chops
on a stick, did look appetizing. We found other welcome changes. The number of
performers increased along with the visitors in costume. However, visitors did
not confine themselves to the Renaissance era for attire. Folks dressed as
elves, in the Game of Thrones genre, as gargoyles, and like a host of
characters from Star Wars. It felt a bit like Dragon Con. The food had taken on
theme of the proverbial county fair, as there were mostly fried items and lots
of fare on a stick. Shannan tried the key lime pie on a stick, weird!
We really enjoyed the Wheel of Death, the acrobats,
the Squire of the Wire and I was particularly fond of the Conversation with
Leonardo da Vinci. The Renaissance Festival ends this weekend, June 5. If you
haven’t been before, it’s a Georgia must. If you haven’t been in a while, it’s
a must return. See their web site for more information http://www.garenfest.com/
Have Fun! Run!
