Greetings!
Around 1985 I began exploring the library of Bruce Springsteen albums, yes the
records (78RPMs). Everything about Greetings
from Asbury Park appealed to my senses from the outset. I found the music
powerful and entertaining. The album title and cover intrigued me as well. The
cover is simply a prototypical postcard.
Over
the years postcards have played an integral communication role in my life ever
since my introduction to the Greetings
from Asbury Park album. Likewise, in my every written communication I begin
with the word, “Greetings!” This is an over two decade practice inspired by the
Springsteen album.
On
a recent trip to Central and South America Shannan and I struggled to find postcards
for sale. Vendors noted the lack of demand for the
once very popular tourist item. It’s very interesting to be in a moment of
evolution. It appears postcards are going the way of the Dodo bird. Like nearly
everything else, there’s and app for that, more commonly is the wave of
selphies being transmitted via phones and tablets, which focus a person, not a
place like the rain forest, or interesting item like the Panama Canal.
Given the short supply of postcards, Shannan and I used technology
to our advantage. We took pictures of places and objects and created postcards
for electronic use and printed versions to mail, as we still enjoy the process using
the U.S. Postal Service.
Roll with the Changes.
